Remove Gems, Jewels, and Runes from Socketed items. 1 x Any Socketed Item ( Spirit Crystal Sword) + 1 x helrune + 1 x scrolloftownportal = Crystal Sword. This removes any items placed inside the sockets of a base item. This destroys the Gems, Jewels or Runes in the item permanently, and you cannot use them again.
The horadric cube was tedious and unnecessary. We're just used to it so many of us don't see how it pointlessly slows things down. It shouldn't be a pain to convert gems, but many people simply avoid lower gems because of how long it takes to convert things in the cube--dragging items one by one, in and out of the box.

Topaz and Diamond have no item crafting recipes, so can be used to socket in armour or reroll charms. However; Amethyst, Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald are used in crafting items, so do not reroll charms with these.
The rule of thumb is that anything using a cube (crafting or other recipes) will turn an ethereal item normal, and remove the bonus damage or defense on it.
